When getting your logo designed initially, many designers willwant to know what type of logo you want'that is, do you want alogotype or do you want a symbol graphical element, such asillustrations, icons, or other abstract design elements, in yourlogo. There is much written on the different types of logos,which I won't get into here.But to clarify just a bit, a logotype is simply a logo withletters and no other design elements. For Nike, it would be alogo without the Swoosh. Logotypes are normally merely thecompany name written out in a stylized font. Since they aresimple, they are often easy to recognize and reproduce oncompany materials.Logotypes are extremely difficult to make though. Every day, several times a day, I saw the same sign. It wastaped on the inside of the door, leading from crew quarters topassenger staterooms. As a guest lecturer aboard the CoralPrincess, bound for Panama, I was considered part of the crew. Iwas one of those to whom the sign applied. It simply said:"Please remember that you are about to enter a passenger area."I've never had opportunity to find out specifically what thecruise line had in mind with those words.
